About the author & editor, Novak Ristov.
I’m Novak Ristov (above), owner and editor of Colour Texture Shape. I grew up and live in Melbourne, Victoria Australia. As you would expect, my website comes from a Melbourne, Victoria Australia, point of view.
I grew up in a family of furniture makers who ran their business from the 1960s to the 1990s. A lot has changed but the basic ergonomic requirements of a human being haven’t, thus all design fits a degree of form follows function. (Louis Sullivan) There is the other side of things that seems to be more fashion-driven, more is more. (Post Modernist Maxim)
I’ve been in some way, shape or form involved in the design industry since I was born. From a cradle in my parent’s garage, as a baby, where they started their journey as self-employed furniture makers to right now. I’m actually sitting on a piece of furniture I made and writing about my experience and design.
Somebody once said to me, “Novak, why furniture?” I replied, “I decided to study a furniture making apprenticeship because certificate IV in weapons of mass destruction was full that year!” Don’t be fooled, “You’re more likely to be fatally crushed by furniture than be killed by a terrorist.” (Washington Post – 24th of November 2015)
Furniture making is, by comparison to some other possible professions, a noble profession. In my case, specialising in upholstery – the art of making people comfortable and with a little je ne sais quoi!
